Golden, Colorado, was founded in 1859 during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. At that time, it was known as Golden City, and it quickly became an important supply center for miners headed up into the mountains to search for gold. In 1862, Golden City became the first Territorial Capital of Colorado. However, it only held that title for one year before it was moved to Denver City.

Despite no longer being the capital, Golden grew throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1893, construction began on the Coors Brewing Company—which is still in operation today and is one of Golden’s most popular tourist attractions. In 1876, the Colorado School of Mines was founded in Golden. The school is now a world-renowned research institution and one of the leading producers of PhDs in engineering and applied sciences in the United States.
